College of Foreign Languages

College of Foreign Languages of Gansu Agricultural University(GAU) developed from Foreign Language Teaching section which was set up since the establishment of GAU. In 1999, Department of Foreign Languages was established as a separate teaching unit and in 2004 it was upgraded to College of Foreign Languages.

The college consists of 3 teaching departments, namely: English Department, English Teaching Section for Postgraduate Candidates and Undergraduates of non-English majors, Foreign Language Training Center. It has 3 management units: College Affair Office, Teaching Affair Office and Student Affair Office.

At present, 43 staff have been working here, one third of which are associate professors and lecturers with M.A degrees. The structure of academic echelon is sound; the teachers are experienced, qualified, expert and creative. Annually, 6 foreign teachers are joining in our teaching. With the young, capable, and well-trained teaching staff, we undertake the teaching of compulsory English courses for the undergraduates of both English major and non-English majors, vocational students, and adult education students; we also assume the teaching duty for listening, speaking, reading and writing courses for the master and doctoral candidates. Approved by the Provincial Department of Education in 2001, we began to enroll undergraduates in English major. Up to June, 2008, there are 343 undergraduates in 10 classes. Above 90 percent of the first batch of graduates were employed in more than ten cities and provinces in 2005 and under the Sino-U.S “1+2+1” program, 5 students got the opportunity to the U.S.A. for further study. So far 318 students have graduated from the college.

Academic Achievements

The college attaches great importance to basic discipline study and always encourages faculty members to publish high level monographs and papers. Up to now, 9 monographs and 3 teaching reference books have been published by national and provincial presses respectively. There are about 140 academic papers published by national and provincial journals respectively.

Research Programs

During the past 3 years, the college has carried out 6 teaching programs, among which, 2 have been awarded prizes at ministry level, 4 prizes at the university level.

Teaching Facilities

There are 6 modern language labs with a total seats of 488, which meet the requirement of audio-visual teaching for students at different levels. In addition, there is a reading room and 1 E-reading room for both teachers and English majors.

F.M. Broadcasting System

F.M. broadcasting system covers the whole campus, and students have access to the broadcasting services of listening at all levels on the campus from7:20-7:50 in the mornings and 17:30-21:30 in the afternoons from Monday to Friday.

Students Achievements:

Up to now: 20 graduates from the college have been admitted as postgraduates, 8 of whom were admitted free of examination .

7 Students have won the awards in “CCTV Cup” and 134 the awards in “National College English Contest”.

一、基本情况介绍

甘肃农大外语学院是在自学校创立以来就设有的外语教研组、而后的教研室、教学部的基础上发展起来的。 1999 年独立设置为外语教学部建制， 2001 年初在学校院系调整改革中更名为外语系， 2004 年初在学校新一轮改革中更名成立了外语学院。

学院现下设大学外语教学部、英语系、语言培训中心以及学院办公室、教务办公室、学生工作办公室、语音室和资料室等机构。

学院目前开设“英语”本科专业，拥有“文学”学士授予权（ 1993 年开始招收俄语专科生 2 届 ,1995 年开始招收外贸英语专科 6 届）。 2001 年开始招英语本科，已毕业三届 318 人，目前在校生 346 人，共 10 个教学班级。（ 2008.6 ）

二、定位与思路

1．学院定位：教学型学院

外语学院的教学工作论性质分为两大块，即公共课英语和专业课英语；主要教学任务有三部分 , 即①全校本科生的大学英语公共课教学，②全校硕士、博士生课程规定的外语教学，③本院英语本科学生的人才培养任务。

2．教学工作思路

以学校的办学指导思想和发展目标为依据，以学院自身工作的特点和性质为出发点，围绕教学工作主旋律，确保本科教学中心地位， ① 以服务全校研究生和本科生大学英语公共课教学和提高常规教学质量为根本； ② 同时按学校突出发展、效益优先、注重质量的办学原则，积极发展英语本科专业，以本科人才培养为中心，以素质教育为重点，夯实语言基础，注重语言应用能力培养，提高教育教学质量，培养复合型外语人才，努力为区域经济和社会发展做出应有的贡献 。

3．专业发展方向与定位

以外语专业为载体，以英语语言技能为工具， 以知识传授为基础、以能力培养为重点、以素质养成为根本的人才培养目标，厚基础，宽口径， 培养外语复合型、实用型人才，扎根陇原黄土，面向西部开发，面向现代化建设，面向国际交流、生产、管理、工程、教育、服务等行业和领域。

依托我校“以农为主，多学科综合发展”的背景，以学科交叉发展为目标，以农业科技翻译、外国文学、应用语言学、英语语言与文化为研究方向，积极努力申报外语硕士学位点和授予权。
